About the House of Clocks
After 39 years in business, we invite you to visit us and our family
at our two showrooms. But before you do, take a moment to learn a little
more about The House of Clocks, and how Joe and Marie started a family
business.
History
It started with a clock. It was a Gustav Becker, a prolific clockmaker whose company was bombed in World War I and was never rebuilt.
Two years after the marriage of Marie
Hoffman
to Joe Hohn, they took a visit to a Luxembourg farm house
that once belonged to the family. They spotted this unique timepiece above the fireplace
and as a kind gesture
to Joe and Marie, the homeowners insisted that they take the clock and give it a
new home. Little then did Joe know how that would change his life.
A decade after serving with the U.S. Army in Germany, this Minnesotan
and his wife took leave to Luxembourg. One rainy afternoon, tossing his
golf clubs into the trunk of his car, Joe spotted the old clock and
a certain curiosity and challenge overcame him.
For the next two years Joe befriended a clockmaker and learned the trade as an apprentice. Joe recalls the man's mantra, "I tell you ONE TIME", and often returned to him for parts and advice as he continued to perfect his skills.
Joe served again in Korea and Heidelberg, but upon returning to the States he brought something back... sixteen grandfather clocks and a dream to open a clock repair shop and showroom inspired by what he learned in Germany.
Upon settling in Lodi, California, the couple was no stranger to the
area with cousins already living here that they frequently visited. They
knew this was the place they wanted to settle, raise a family, and open
their shop.
They found a home at 304 W. Lodi Avenue, and with clocks covering every inch of the walls throughout the house, "The House of Clocks" was born. There wasn't even a place to hang a photo.
And the original Gustav Becker clock? Come and see it in our Downtown Lodi showroom where it still hangs on the wall. Please stop by any time.
